Write the Business Event Plan Before Choosing an Analytics Tool

Editorial owner: Yumea · Published and reviewed on · Next review

An analytics platform can collect thousands of events without answering the simplest question: did the user obtain the promised outcome? A business event plan starts with the decisions the team needs to make, then defines the minimum evidence required.

Start with the outcome, not the click

A click proves interaction. It does not prove understanding, activation or value. First define:

  • the outcome expected by the user;
  • the earliest credible sign that it occurred;
  • the behavior showing that the user returns for the same value;
  • the failure or abandonment requiring intervention.

For a sales-preparation assistant, “message generated” is activity. “Message approved and sent” is closer to activation. “Qualified reply received” approaches the outcome.

Six event families

1. Journey entry

Case created, authorized import, objective selected or first complete request.

2. Activation

The first moment of observable value. It should be rare enough to remain meaningful.

3. Quality and correction

Accepted output, material edit, rejection, regeneration, appeal or corrected data.

4. Business outcome

Reply received, case resolved, delay reduced, error prevented, conversion or another effect tied to the promise.

5. Retention

A return to the same valuable use, not merely another login.

6. Risk and degradation

Missing source, denied permission, human handoff, blocked action, incident and recovery.

The useful event record

For every event, define:

  • stable name and business-language meaning;
  • the question it answers;
  • exact trigger;
  • required properties, types and allowed values;
  • journey or decision identifier;
  • owner;
  • personal data to exclude;
  • retention period;
  • validation test;
  • version and change date.

If nobody knows which decision an event supports, do not collect it yet.

Connect without centralizing everything

Product, billing, CRM and observability do not need to copy all their data. Use correlation identifiers and define one source of truth for each object.

For an AI capability, link the business event to the system version and delegation mode without sending sensitive content to analytics. The technical trace explains execution; the event explains the journey stage.

Start with ten events

A first version can fit into ten carefully defined events: entry, activation, outcome, retention, three corrections or failures and three product-specific critical steps. Add only what changes a decision.

This constraint reduces inconsistent names, unused properties and contradictory dashboards.

Validate data quality

Before publishing a dashboard:

  1. replay the journey with a test account;
  2. verify every trigger and property;
  3. test duplicates, offline recovery and version changes;
  4. compare a sample with operational reality;
  5. document definition breaks.

A precise metric calculated from an ambiguous event remains misleading.

Fact, inference and hypothesis

Direct fact: an analytics platform does not define activation or business outcome for you.

Inference: a short, governed plan improves analytical reliability while reducing collection, storage and interpretation time.

Hypothesis to test: ten decision-linked events produce more learning than exhaustive instrumentation without shared definitions.

FAQ

How many events are needed at launch?

The minimum required to measure activation, outcome, retention and major failure modes. Ten is a useful constraint, not a law.

Should prompts be sent to analytics?

Not by default. Prefer identifiers, categories and versions; retain content only for a justified and protected purpose.

Who owns the plan?

A product or data owner can maintain it, but operations, engineering and data protection should share the definitions.

Next step

Use the event-plan template, choose one product promise and limit the first version to ten rows. For a review before instrumentation, email contact@yumea.fr with the subject “EVENT PLAN.”
